PE-12 (Emergency Lighting) is about automatic lighting that switches on if the power fails, so people can see the emergency exits and evacuation routes in the room or building that holds the system. It is a life-safety and facility control — the server does not provide it — but it protects the people who run the server. It is a Low-baseline Physical and Environmental Protection control.

What good looks like

• Have emergency lighting that turns on by itself when the power drops — a battery-backed fixture or a lit exit sign.
• Make sure it covers the exits and the path out of the space, not just the rack.
• Test and maintain it — most units have a test button, and batteries fade and need replacing.
• Treat this as a facility control: the Linux server has no setting for it, but the requirement still applies to the space it lives in.

How to move it toward Implemented

• Note whether the space that holds the server has automatic emergency lighting on the exit path; if not, a plug-in battery emergency light or a lit exit-sign fixture closes the gap.
• Press the test button (or simulate an outage) and confirm the light comes on and covers the way out; record the date.
• Add emergency lighting to your maintenance list so the batteries get tested and replaced on a schedule.
• Attach that check and the maintenance note as hardening evidence on the asset, naming PE-12 in the Requirement field — that moves it from ‘To assess’ toward ‘Completed’.
